About
Plumia is a nonprofit think tank exploring the future of citizenship in a borderless world, with the long-term goal of building an internet country for digital nomads. The project was conceived during a hackathon at SafetyWing, an insurance company for remote workers and travelers whose mission is to build a global social safety net.
Lauren Razavi, a British-Iranian author of 'Global Natives,' served as Plumia's executive director and has been the project's most prominent voice, describing it as a 'moonshot mission' to offer citizenship as a service. Plumia's 10-year horizon goal is to provide the full functionality of a nation-state in a borderless, portable format, including health insurance, income protection, pensions, and dispute resolution that people normally access through national governments.
The project has been in discussions with multiple governments about partnerships, including publicly with Montenegro. Plumia publishes Borderless, a weekly newsletter that grew from 2,000 readers in January 2024 to over 65,000 by December of that year, covering news relevant to digital nomads, remote workers, expats, and global citizens.
Through its partnership with Interintellect, Plumia hosts a monthly salon series called 'Building a Different Network State' that brings together thinkers, builders, and policymakers. Razavi has likened national citizenship and tax to a subscription that is very hard to cancel, saying that people are enrolled based on the coincidence of their birthplace, which does not work in the 21st century.
The project sits within SafetyWing's broader ecosystem, which already provides travel and health insurance to nomads and is expanding into income protection and pension services.
