About

Oceanix is a blue tech company founded in 2018 by Itai Madamombe and Marc Collins Chen to design and build floating cities for people to live sustainably on the ocean. The company's flagship project is Oceanix Busan, the world's first prototype sustainable floating city, developed in partnership with UN-Habitat and the Busan Metropolitan City in South Korea.

The project was unveiled at the UN headquarters in New York in April 2022, with architectural design led by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) and SAMOO (Samsung Group). Oceanix Busan consists of three interconnected floating platforms totaling 6.3 hectares, designed to house a community of 12,000 people, with the potential to expand to over 20 platforms and 100,000 residents.

Each platform serves a distinct purpose: residential living, lodging for visitors, and a co-working and maritime research hub. The platforms connect to the mainland via bridges and are designed to rise and fall with changing water levels, making them naturally resilient to sea level rise and flooding.

The project integrates six systems for achieving a circular economy: zero waste, closed-loop water, food production through urban farming, net-zero energy from floating and rooftop solar panels, clean mobility, and coastal habitat regeneration. Each neighborhood treats and replenishes its own water and generates 100% of its operational energy on site.

The broader problem Oceanix is trying to solve is real and urgent. Two out of five people worldwide live within 100 kilometers of a coastline, and 90 percent of mega-cities are vulnerable to rising sea levels.

Flooding already destroys billions of dollars of infrastructure annually and displaces millions of people. Oceanix positions floating infrastructure as a practical way for coastal cities to expand safely onto the water rather than continuing to build in flood-prone areas.

Live with builders from around the world. Learn, burn, earn and have fun.
