MoonDAO is a decentralized organization that funds space research, missions, and technology development with the goal of establishing a permanent settlement on the Moon. Founded in 2021, the organization raised over 2,600 ETH through its community and operates entirely through on-chain governance.

Members hold a token called $MOONEY, which grants voting rights on proposals, budgets, and project selection. There is no central leadership making unilateral decisions.

Every allocation of funds is visible on the blockchain. The organization has already produced notable results.

In 2022, MoonDAO became the first decentralized organization to send a person to space when its members voted to purchase a seat on a Blue Origin flight for Coby Cotton of the YouTube channel Dude Perfect. Since then, the community has allocated over $600,000 to more than 75 space-related projects, ranging from zero-gravity astronaut training programs to early-stage research on lunar infrastructure components.

MoonDAO's roadmap targets an operational lunar settlement by 2030. Co-founder Pablo Moncada has acknowledged this timeline is ambitious, but the intent is to set a pace that compels faster progress than what larger institutions typically deliver.

The plan includes fundraising for launch vehicle access, open-source hardware development, Earth-based habitat simulations, and the eventual transport of infrastructure to the lunar surface. The funding model sets MoonDAO apart from traditional space organizations.

Anyone worldwide can purchase $MOONEY tokens, lock them for voting power, and participate in governance. The system uses quadratic voting to prevent any single large holder from controlling outcomes.

Projects funded through the platform share intellectual property with the community, creating a feedback loop where successful work generates revenue that funds future missions.
