About
Atlas Island is a seasteading project founded in 2021 by a group of Seasteading Institute ambassadors, led by Mason, a physician by training. The project has gathered roughly 400 online members committed to becoming citizens of a future seastead.
Atlas Island takes a deliberately pragmatic, step-by-step approach to building a floating community rather than attempting to create a massive floating city from day one. The plan involves five stages, starting with establishing marina communities made up of individual vessels near onshore amenities, then gradually developing infrastructure and moving further offshore.
The platforms are envisioned to work like a Free Private City, where agreements between individuals and service providers are laid out in explicit contracts. Rather than declaring sovereignty, which has proven legally risky for other seasteading projects, Atlas Island plans to operate under a flag of convenience, similar to how cruise ships work.
This provides near-complete autonomy while staying within international law. The organization is structured around local associations that operate like yacht clubs, with the first club being set up in Florida.
Each local association chooses how to organize itself, with guidance from the main board. The project combines ideas from seasteading, free private cities, agorism, and cryptocurrency.
Atlas Island is motivated by the observation that the biggest predictor of someone's economic success is the country where they were born, and aims to provide an alternative for people whose potential is limited by the government they happen to live under.
