Asgardia is a self-declared space nation founded in 2016 by Russian scientist Igor Ashurbeyli, with the stated aim of creating a sovereign state in low Earth orbit. It has issued digital passports to hundreds of thousands of citizens worldwide, launched a satellite (Asgardia-1) carrying citizen data, and established a parliamentary government with elected officials.

While unrecognized by any UN member state, Asgardia operates as a serious long-term experiment in extraterrestrial governance.
