About
The Free Republic of Verdis is a micronation proclaimed on May 30, 2019 by Daniel Jackson, a then-20-year-old Australian, on a 0.5 km² strip of forest along the Danube River that is unclaimed by either Croatia or Serbia due to their unresolved border dispute stemming from the Croatian War of Independence. Jackson's stated goals include democratic governance, environmental stewardship, and ethnic reconciliation between Croats and Serbs, with national symbols incorporating imagery from both countries.
The project has around 400 self-identified citizens globally but lacks international recognition; in 2023 Croatian authorities deported settlers and issued Jackson a lifetime ban from Croatia, leaving him to run Verdis in exile.
